Exercise Testing

The exercise test is sometimes referred to as a Treadmill.  It is used to evaluate how your heart responds to the stress of exercise.  This is accomplished by having you walk on a treadmill or ride a bicycle while your electrocardiogram (EKG) is recorded.

In preparation for an Exercise Test please follow these instructions:

1. Do not eat or drink three hours prior to your treadmill, however, you may brush your teeth and have small sips of water.

2. Do not smoke prior to your test.

3. Do not take any medication prior to your test unless specifically directed by your doctor.

Insulin dependent Diabetic Instructions:

For morning treadmill take half usual morning insulin and skip breakfast.

For afternoon treadmill take usual morning insulin and eat normal breakfast and then skip lunch.

4. A shower or bath should be taken prior to the test in order to allow good skin contact with the electrodes.  Do not use lotion.

5. Wear walking shoes and comfortable clothing on the day of the test.  Do not wear boots, high-heeled shoes or slippers.

6. Relax before your test; no strenuous exercise should be performed.

7. Bring the medications you are currently taking.
