Nutritional Cooking Classes

All classes will begin at 5:00pm at the Harmony Campus Cardiac Rehab Gym (2121 E. Harmony Rd., corner of Timberline and Harmony).  Classes usually last about 1 hour.  Anna Aughenbaugh's cookbooks will be available for sale.  Her cookbooks include recipes featured during her cooking classes.  All classes are free of charge!  Questions? January 21th New Foods/Julie Hansen, M.S., R.D. and Jenifer Bowman, MS, RD
Lets start the New Year by taste testing some new foods. Julie and I have a long list of heart healthy foods we have been wanting to try and we invite you to try them with us. Frozen foods, convenience foods, snacks, desserts and more. This will be fun.

February 18th – Beans, Beans, Beans!/Anna Aughenbaugh (the Bean Queen)
Beans are an amazing food: low in fat, high in fiber, protein and iron.  Learn some new tasty recipes for making quick, easy, heart healthy meals with beans.

 March 18th –Heart Healthy Benefits of Tea/Lori Bricker, MS, RD from The Tea Table
Sit back, relax and enjoy a cup of tea – its good for your heart. Lori Bricker, owner of The Tea Table, will share the latest research about the health benefits of tea while we sample recipes made with various teas.

April 15th – Eggs are Eggcellent for a Healthy Heart/Jenifer Bowman, MS, RD
Of course you can eat eggs.  Learn how OmegaTech’s Gold Circle Farm eggs can be part of a heart healthy diet.  We will sample Gold Circle Farm eggs and try other recipes that include eggs. Plus, great ideas on what to do with all your leftover Easter eggs.

May 20st –Low-Sodium Cooking with Fresh Herbs/Sue Oberle from Oberle Botanical and Jenifer Bowman, MS, RD
Fresh herbs are fun to cook with and give your food wonderful flavor without adding extra salt and fat. Sue will share her knowledge about herbs and teach us how to plant an herb garden while we sample tasty low-sodium foods flavored with herbs.

 June 17th – Calcium and Heart Health/Stephanie Smith, MS, RD from Western Dairy Council
Calcium is good for your whole body, not just your bones. Stephanie will share the latest research about calcium and its effects on your whole body. We will learn how to include cheese as part of a health healthy diet and sample other tasty low-fat dairy products.

July 15th – Easy Ways to Prepare Fish and Seafood/Mike Reeves, owner of Fish Restaurant

Omega-3 fats in fish are good for your heart.  Learn which fish are highest in omega-3 fats and how to include fish as part of your heart healthy diet. Mike will demonstrate easy ways to prepare fish for delicious summer meals.

August 19th – The Fats of Life/Jenifer Bowman, MS, RD

Where is the fat found in food and what kind of fats are the best for your heart? We will review the types of fat and which foods provide you with the right balance of fat that is best for your heart.

September 16th –Heart Healthy Benefits of Tea/Lori Bricker, MS, RD from The Tea Table

Sit back, relax and enjoy a cup of tea – its good for your heart. Lori Bricker, owner of The Tea Table, will share the latest research about the health benefits of tea while we sample recipes made with various teas. Reschedule from March due to the blizzard.

October 21st – Crock Pot Cooking/Julie Hansen, M.S., R.D.

Cooking with a crock-pot is quick, easy, simple and dinner is ready when you walk in the door at the end of a long day. What more could you ask for? Julie has been experimenting with crock-pot recipes and has a great collection for us to taste test.

November 11th – Gifts from the Kitchen/Julie Hansen, MS, RD

You can make great gifts to give your friends and family right out of your own kitchen!!! We will show you the healthy versions of these homemade gifts that your friends will enjoy.

December 9th – Heart Healthy Holiday Cooking/Jenifer Bowman, MS, RD

Learn how to “lighten up” your favorite holiday recipes. It’s simple and easy; reduce the fat, but keep the flavor that you love. Bring your family’s favorite holiday recipes and we will discuss delicious strategies to make them heart healthy.
